About Feeling Blue SPC
You can probably name at least two people who have been touched by suicide - perhaps you or a loved one suffers from this disease. Pennsylvania has an estimated 8,000 residents (or 7% of the current population!) affected by the suicide of a family member, loved one, or friend. Approximately 30% of the Commonwealth's suicides occur in Southeastern Pennsylvania; 43 of these deaths were between the ages of 10 and 24. These numbers are staggering, especially when coupled with the fact that studies have shown that for every person identified, there is one that suffers in silence.
Feeling Blue Suicide Prevention Council has recognized the prevalence of suicide in our community and its effect on the overall health and well being of our area. We realize that early recognition of the risk factors is vitally important. We also recognize that the uninsured and under insured may not seek these preventative services, when early recognition would be possible. Despite the growing problem of depression and suicide in our region there is little support for those who need it. Feeling Blue's challenge was to find a way to meet the needs of area families as well as service agencies that need training to deal with the loss and grief that many experience when dealing with a suicide.
Ten years ago, Feeling Blue was formed and took the first step in meeting that challenge, by offering support services to those affected by this human tragedy. The goal of was to provide support and education to those who had suffered a loss or was dealing with their own depression and suicidal thoughts. Currently, Feeling Blue has established itself as a leader and a main source of support and training to families as well as healthcare providers. To continue our mission we need your support. We fill an important gap in services and without your help many will not receive the training or assistance that they vitally need.
